Michael Strauss - The Road to Independence: Revolutionary War Research (Presentation)

The Revolutionary War was fought in part over tensions between England and her colonies that escalated over time into violence with the opening shots fired in Massachusetts in April 1775. Some of the historical records examined will include compiled military service records, pensions, state and federal bounty land, local militia, along with records from the Continental Navy and Marine Corps. Additionally historical context include some of the national emergencies after the end of the war in 1783 including both Shay’s Rebellion and the later Whiskey Rebellion.

We will discuss and demonstrate strategies and techniques – often using the tools already supplied by the DNA testing companies – to sort through your match list and begin to identify these more distant DNA relatives.

Our speaker will be Thomas MacEntee: author, educator, advocate, entrepreneus, and that "genealogy guy" who helps you accomplish your family history goals. Thomas MacEntee is a guy with a love of punk rock music but also art history where somehow "fell" into the technology industry years ago. He left a lucrative tech career to pursue his love of family history and genealogy. Technology and historical research seems like opposites, but "tech people" like Thomas are needed to guide you through the maze of options so you can find your ancestors and bring their stories to life. |

This presentation highlights resources available at the Delaware Public Archives for researching B;ack family history within Delaware, from the present day and throughout the history of the State. Learn techniques to unearth crucial details about formely enslaved ancestors and Delaware's rich history of free black communities.
